Single Crystal Piezoelectric Materials - Example Applications

Background

Actuators

TRS piezoelectric single crystal actuators can produce strain levels in excess of 1% and exhibit five times the strain energy density of conventional piezoceramics. Unlike piezoceramic actuators that employ strain magnification schemes, single crystal actuators can thus deliver higher strain levels without sacrificing generative force. High coupling (>90%) also leads to dramatic improvement in passive vibration damping.

Transducers

The high electromechanical coupling of TRS crystals increases transducer bandwidth, resulting in greater sensitivity and acoustic power. In addition, low strain hysteresis results in improved high power efficiency, and lower acoustic impedance than piezoceramics allows for easier matching to air or water.

Cryogenic Applications

Piezoelectric single crystals also excel at cryogenic temperatures, where strain levels are comparable to those of standard PZT ceramics at room temperature.

TRS' new relaxor ferroelectric single crystals (PZN-PT and PMN-PT) are poised to revolutionize piezoelectric device applications.
